IR Poster Size Prints wildbill 2/22/2006
Does anyone have any tips on making poster size prints of IR images? I would like to grow them to 2' x 3' but, as you know, the resolution is not good enough to do this.

Here is what I do when we need big prints.

Increase the resolution of the image by resampling to a higher resolution, e.g. 1024 x 768. Do not just resize, use a resample function. Try several resampling algorithms to get the results you want.

Then I lightly apply a sharpening filter to the image to give it a bit more "punch". Don't overdo it or else you will have a rather ugly looking image.

There is a lot of software on the market that will do this. One that I like that is totally free is Irfanview, http://www.irfanview.com/

An even better way is to make a high resolution mosaic of a scene. Stitching the images together can take some time but the effort is worth it. FLIR has a program that will automatically do this called Image Builder. More information is available at http://www.flir.com.hk/faq.htm#q6
