I recently ran into someone and was discussing IR thermography with them. He said his company used xray techniques to evaluate welds as well as IR. What am I missing. How can you evaluate a weld with IR.

Maybe they are using IR to verify interpass temps or preheat during the welding process? Or possibly during PWHT?

I cannot think of a way that IR would substitute for Xray in weld quality. Temp sticks work quite well for the welding process and the PWHT guys monitor while cooking, so I would like to know where IR comes in... my curiosity is aroused.

Just happened to think that clean shiney metals usually have poor emissivity so that would make IR weld inspection even more "iffy".
