Can we use E-320 for the furnace tube inspection? Govinda-IRT 9/6/2007
We have ThermaCAM E-320 LW camera. Can it be possible by using a filter of 3.9 / 10.9 micron, we can measure the furnace tube temperatue? If any one has any idea, please reply.......

No it is not possible.

E320 does not have this feature, of such filter nor does Flir recommend this camera for use in Furnace Tube Inspection for number of reasons.

When it is a gas fired boiler you exactly get the graph of spectral transmission as shown above.

Therefore we can conclude that more of spectral transmittances happens between 3-4 µm and peaks at 3.9 µm. So we can use a camera with narrow band pass filter at exactly at 3.9 µm is most suitable.

When something burns, it usually emits carbon Dioxide (CO2) gas. Measuring temperature through flame can be possible by avoiding spectral range of CO2 and using a band-pass filter exactly at 3.9 µm.

Availability of Heat Shield Ar coated with Si window

We all know higher the heat into electronics lesser the efficiency of the electronics i.e. Infrared Camera.

Looking through peep hole of boiler means the ambience nearly goes to above 50 Deg C. Normal camera might malfunction if exposed to such a higher temperature range longer time.

Moreover the heat shield of ThermaCAM P50F also includes Ar coated Si-window for protecting the lens of the system while exposed to high temperature application. At one point while using the system with the shield you will find the camera lens and body was well protected.

A heat shield in ThermaCAM P50F protects the operator and camera, even when the shield is too hot to touch, the heat is dissipated through the corner of the shield. Therefore the camera lens and body remain cool. It protects the camera by reflecting the heat away from the camera and camera operator.

With E320 there is a risk of damaging detector when pointed at high temperature source because of high energy absorption by the detector in furnace tube application.
