Hearthstone fireplace water infiltration? mike512 1/22/2010
I'm new to the field of building thermography and can recognize various patterns, but I came across an anomaly while scanning a hearthstone fireplace in a residence that was built in 2003 and not exactly sure what it is. In the attached scan, Li1 is the line where the fireplace meets the ceiling. Sp2 is where the fireplace meets the side wall and missing insulation is apparent.

Any help is much appreciated.

Mike

I had a similar leak at a firplace. found it to be the chimney cap was made incorrectly and allowed water to leak over the storm collar and run through the house over the firplace into the lower level.
A moisture meter can verify this anomaly.
It could be cool air coming down past the chimney /framing gap.

Thank you for the tips. I will check with a moisture meter.
