Question

I have a possible client who has a new home and had low-e argon window with extra UV protection (as advertised) and doors (window parts) installed in 2009. They now believe that they did not get the correct windows. They say the windows are cold and fabric is being washed out. The windows did not come with itching on theme that would certify them as low-e argon and they did not get any paper certification to support this either. The window (glass) parts were manufactured elsewhere and local company installed into frames. Client want the windows tested to see if they are as energy efficient as they are suppose to be. This is a large home with attached garage (2600 sq.’ on each two levels, and 350 sq’ in garage and space over garage). There is no way of telling, that I know, what gas are in the windows so this leaves IR. Sense all windows (26 units and 3 exterior doors) are all the same (installed same time) and this could be a court case, I need to be careful. I don’t see an option for a control for my measurements. I read the article ‘Thermo glass’ and it was informative. Does anyone else have any advice on how best to precede with this if I decide to take this job. I really hate to see a manufacture and reseller getting away with this if the clients claims are true. Advice, procedures and pitfalls would be greatly appreciated.

A thermal camera can spot window errors in construction and application but detecting an actual coating would be difficultat best and impossibel at other times. Much training would be needed with very controlled conditions.
Use the articles attached to get some information on testers and such.

Sorry for the late input but this will definitely help.
A thermal double glazed unit usually comprises of three low conductivity components. Firstly, we have the spacer bar. This will glow like the sun if it a standard aluminium space and has no thermal values whatsoever. You then have the glass it will either be a soft coat or hard coat the first is better, but you can only determine a presence not type. This is done with a small machine that picks up the metallic coati (which should be on the outer face of the inner pane. Check they sometimes get it wrong, and it is on the outer pane and is such working the wrong way round Last but not least you have the gas. My best guess is that it is argon and will only be full to 90%. That's the best they can do not let anyone tell you different. If you stand on the outside with no sun glare and the blinds shut to prevent reflection you should see a faint line across the unit, this is the gas line. You need to work the camera very hard, and it has to be a high end detector. If in doubt select a window that you know to be without gas and take an image as a control image and then look at the windows one at a time. Midday is not a good time.Hope this helps.

Low E argon filled windows have an R value of less than 5, normally 3 - 4. They will still feel cold, but not as cold as a single glazed window which has an R value of < 1. Super windows may achieve R 8.
