I'm reading ITC for a while now and find a lot of good infrared case-problem and good results. Sorry for my "not perfect english" but i'm french canadian from Montreal. Here is the fact: One of my client ask me if my Flir EX320 is explosion proof. I'm searching a lot but found nothing about it. Does infrared camera is class 1, division 1, group C and D approved. The company is doing chemical solvant transformation.. Something like that. Thanks a lot Dominic Thermocad inc.

No, your camera is not explosion proof. There is I believe an enclosure available for it that is Atex aproved. You could fit your camera into the enclosure and use it as an explosion proof camera. I have'nt seen this yet, or had an opportunity to try it out. I can see advantages with its use. I dont know the transmission rate of the associated optics, but I dont think you will be able to compensate for this in your camera, and this will present additional difficulties in achieving accurate/reliable temperature measurement. The enclosure is not a Flir product, I think it is manufactured by Hawk IR. To be honest I work in plenty of facilities that have explosion proof areas and usually have no problems other than the need for a hot works permit.

Thanks a lot Bob. I would like to say to my client that is explosion proof.. but I have to be honest with myself that is not.. Other people have any experience with that type of industries? Thank you everyone Dominic

Hello Dominic, I work in the offshore petrochemical industry and believe our rig complex just upgraded its FLIR E-Series fleet to the product Bob mentioned, it is marketed under the tradename "ExCAM" by Hawk IR. The system demonstrated to us was much more than a simple "enclosure" as Bob mentioned. Once upgraded to the ExCAM configuration you can enter a Zone I classified hazardous area without the need for permits (don't know how that translates to Class I Div I, we work to ATEX). Prior to ExCAM we had to ask for permits, as there was no alternative they were sometimes issued. However from a due diligance point of view we have a duty to work safely, ExCAM was the answer. On the optics front, we had the same concern as Bob, however we checked the demo ExCAM with a blackbody and found there was no effect on temperature as a result of the upgrade. Not sure how they do that, but it works! We don't have an EX320 but I am told there is an ExCAM version for this model also, check out the Hawk IR website, there should be some information on there http://www.hawk-ir.com/ Hopefully the systems will be delivered by the time I get back offshore, will post some in field feedback then. Hello TJB, If I understand your explaination, your are talking about a "cover" for ir camera to get it safe for hazardous zone. But when I red the hawk link you posted, I understand it's a new IR CAMERA. Am I right? My camera is brand new and I don't have money to by a new one hehe. I'm little bit confused between your explanaition and the Hawk's one. Can somebody give some light or confirm what i'm saying? Thank you Dominic

You don't need to buy a whole new camera, you can retro-upgrade your current system Ex320 to "Explosion Proof" by sending it to Hawk IR. TJB
