Optical Gas Imaging I Certification

With our optical gas imaging course, you can develop the skills and understanding you need. Skilled users of optical gas imaging cameras can inspect more than 3,000 connections per day in many applications—six times more than inspectors using sniffer technology. This provides organizations with the most efficient LDAR inspection technology so they can meet many required emission reduction actions, including regulatory oversight like the USEPA OOOOa for the Oil and Gas Industry. Students in the Optical Gas Imaging course will learn how to set up and operate optical gas imaging (OGI) cameras to ensure maximum proficiency. They will learn how to optimally adjust their cameras for varying field conditions to find gas leaks and under what environmental parameters gas leaks are most easily found, somewhat easy to find, and difficult to find. With our flexible learning options, students are able to ensure their OGI camera and inspections meet a wide variety of operating envelope challenges, with the ultimate goal of meeting any required work practices or verification checks of the technology.

  • Proper setup and operation of FLIR G-Series, GF-Series, and other OGI camera models.;

  • The regulatory framework associated with optical gas imaging (OOOOa and Appendix K).;

  • Best practices for OGI inspections and critical aspects of Appendix K that impact camera operators. ;

  • Fundamental thermal science and heat transfer concepts. ;

  • The science behind leak detection and how OGI cameras can image gas clouds.;

  • How to use HSM, thermal tuning, and other camera features to optimize leak detection. ;

  • How to ensure an adequate temperature difference (Delta T) for gas detection. ;

  • Basic safety practices for performing an OGI inspection.;

IR Camera requirements

Completion of hands-on labs & exercises will be required, so please bring your thermal camera to class.

  • If you do not have access to a camera, you can rent one through Teledyne FLIR by calling 866-477-3687 ext. 1.
  • If you are attending the course with a colleague or friend you may share a camera, however we recommend no more than three students per camera.
