    Certification

    Why Infrared Certification?

    expand icon expand icon

Infrared certification is more than just a credential- it's a vital investment in your professional growth. It formally recognizes your expertise in thermography, validating your skills, training, and hands-on experience. Achieving IR certification ensures you stay at the forefront of evolving IR technologies and industry best practices, while maintaining the credibility needed to meet global standards. With certification, you demonstrate your commitment to quality, safety, and continuous improvement- valued by organizations and clients worldwide

    Course Development Standards

    expand icon expand icon

As a global organization serving diverse industries and applications, we design our curriculum, examinations, and recertification processes based on internationally recognized standards. These include guidelines from the American Society for Non-Destructive Testing (ASNT) and the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). Specifically, we base our curriculum and processes on ASNT SNT-TC-1A, CP-105, ISO 18436, and ISO 9712. We are also ISO 9001 certified in the training, education, and certification of professional users of thermal infrared systems. Our commitment to quality education and recognition of leading NDT frameworks ensures that Infrared Training Center certifications are globally respected as the industry gold standard.

    Why ASNT & ISO Standards?

    expand icon expand icon

These standards provide a consistent framework for training in infrared thermography and other non-destructive testing (NDT) methods such as vibration analysis, ultrasonics, and oil analysis. By following these guidelines, we ensure our courses meet a high level of quality and credibility recognized worldwide. This approach also helps organizations meet internal training requirements, as many base their thermography programs on the same standards. As a result, our certifications often eliminate the need for companies to develop separate in-house training programs.

    Certification Level Progression & Objectives

    expand icon expand icon

We take a structured and progressive approach to learning, ensuring each level of certification builds upon the previous one with clearly defined training objectives:

Level I / Category I- Designed for new thermographers and focuses on building a foundation of knowledge in camera operation, basic physics concepts and image interpretation skills.

Level II / Category II- Expand upon Level I knowledge and comprehension, strengthening imaging and measurement skills with more applications and analytical scenarios.

Level III / Category III- Designed for the Master Thermographer.  Emphasizes problem solving, evaluation and diagnostic processes, and infrared program development.

What If I Don’t Pass the Certification Exam?

    expand icon expand icon

In the event a student does not pass the certification exam on their first attempt, we allow two additional exam sittings. Students who are required to retest are provided guidance by their instructor on which areas they should focus their study efforts to best prepare. In total, students have three attempts to pass the certification exam before they are required to reattend another certification course.

    Recertification

    expand icon expand icon

Infrared Training Center certifications are valid for 5 years and must be renewed upon expiration. You can renew your certification by attending a course, passing an online exam, or demonstrating professional contributions. If you need assistance or would like a consultation to determine which recertification option is best for you, please contact us for more information. We’re here to help guide you through the process.

Am I Required To Bring A Camera To Class?

    expand icon expand icon

We strongly recommend having thermal imaging (infrared) camera for training. Throughout the course, you will be asked to participate in camera operation labs designed to complement course lectures. Requirements for certification can be completed without a thermal imaging camera, however, it will improve your learning experience if you can follow along and participate. If attending with a colleague or friend, you may share a thermal imaging camera, but we suggest no more than three students to one camera to ensure all participants have equal opportunity to participate.

What Type of Camera Do You Suggest?

    expand icon expand icon

Camera type will largely depend on your application. As a general recommendation we suggest a camera capable of radiometric imagery that can be adjusted for custom object parameters (emissivity, T-refl, etc.). Spot pyrometers and test & measurement meters are not recommended as a primary device for class. Specialized applications such as Optical Gas Imaging will require a FLIR GF-Series or equivalent camera.

    Necessary Class Items

    expand icon expand icon

Students are encouraged to bring a thermal imaging camera, a tablet or laptop with Wi-Fi capability, and any supporting accessories (optics, charger cables, batteries, etc.). Final certification exams are administered electronically and will require a laptop, tablet, or smartphone to complete. Training will also address analysis/reporting software which we recommend having installed prior to training. Please note company devices may require administrative approval to install third party software.

    What Software Should I Download?

    expand icon expand icon

Software will vary based on camera manufacturer. For FLIR imagers, we recommend FLIR Thermal Studio. Downloadable at this link. For training purposes, the free starter version is acceptable. Alternatively, FLIR Ignite, a cloud-based application for image processing, analysis, report generation, and data storage is also acceptable. Please note FLIR Thermal Studio is only compatible with Windows operating systems. For troubleshooting and software support please contact the FLIR technical support team for assistance:
